Pelling

Pelling is a beautiful hill town in western Sikkim, famous for its breathtaking views of Mount Kanchenjunga, peaceful monasteries, waterfalls, and rich cultural heritage. Located at an altitude of about 2,150 meters, it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Sikkim. Visitors can enjoy nature, adventure, photography, trekking, and spiritual experiences. Attractions such as Pemayangtse Monastery, Rabdentse Ruins, Sky Walk, and Khecheopalri Lake make Pelling an ideal destination for families, couples, and nature lovers seeking tranquility amidst the Himalayas.

Pelling is a picturesque hill station in the western part of Sikkim, renowned for its stunning Himalayan landscapes and panoramic views of Mount Kanchenjunga, the third-highest mountain in the world. Situated at an elevation of approximately 2,150 meters above sea level, Pelling offers a pleasant climate throughout most of the year and serves as a gateway to many natural and cultural attractions.

The town is particularly famous for the historic Pemayangtse Monastery, one of the oldest and most significant monasteries in Sikkim. Nearby Rabdentse Ruins, the former capital of the Kingdom of Sikkim, provide visitors with a glimpse into the region’s royal history. The Pelling Sky Walk, India's first glass skywalk in a mountainous region, offers spectacular views of valleys and snow-capped peaks.

Nature lovers can explore beautiful waterfalls such as Kanchenjunga Falls and Rimbi Waterfalls, while Khecheopalri Lake is revered as a sacred wish-fulfilling lake by Buddhists and Hindus alike. Adventure enthusiasts can enjoy trekking, mountain biking, village walks, and photography.

Pelling is also known for its rich culture, warm hospitality, traditional Sikkimese cuisine, and peaceful environment. The town attracts travelers seeking relaxation away from crowded urban destinations. During clear weather, sunrise and sunset views over the Kanchenjunga range create unforgettable memories.

With its combination of spirituality, history, adventure, and natural beauty, Pelling is one of the most rewarding destinations in Northeast India and an excellent choice for travelers looking to experience the charm of the Himalayas.

📜 History

Pelling is one of the most beautiful hill towns in West Sikkim, but its history is much older than many people realise. The area was once covered with dense forests and was home to the Lepcha community, who are regarded as the original inhabitants of Sikkim. Later, the Bhutia people settled here after migrating from Tibet, bringing along their Buddhist traditions and culture. Over time, Pelling became closely connected with the history of the former Kingdom of Sikkim.
The nearby town of Rabdentse, which is only a few kilometres from Pelling, served as the second capital of the Kingdom of Sikkim from the late 17th century until the early 19th century. During this period, the region witnessed the rise of Buddhism, construction of monasteries, and the growth of local trade. However, repeated invasions by the Gurkhas of Nepal led to the destruction of Rabdentse, forcing the Sikkimese rulers to shift their capital elsewhere.

For many years, Pelling remained a quiet mountain village known mainly to local residents and pilgrims. Tourism started growing in the 1980s and 1990s as better roads connected the town with Gangtok and other parts of Sikkim. Visitors were attracted by the breathtaking views of Mount Kanchenjunga, peaceful monasteries, waterfalls, and historical sites. Today, Pelling is one of Sikkim's most popular tourist destinations, offering a perfect blend of history, spirituality, and natural beauty while still preserving its traditional culture and peaceful atmosphere.
