📜 History
The Statue of Unity has a very special place in India's history because it was built to honour Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who played a major role in uniting the country after Independence. He is popularly known as the "Iron Man of India" because of his strong leadership and determination. After India became independent in 1947, more than 560 princely states had to join the Indian Union. Sardar Patel successfully convinced these states to become a part of one united India, making him one of the main architects of modern India. The idea of building a grand statue in his memory was announced in 2010 by Narendra Modi, who was then the Chief Minister of Gujarat. The construction work officially started on 31 October 2013, which is also Sardar Patel's birth anniversary. Thousands of workers, engineers, and experts worked together for nearly five years to complete this remarkable project.
The statue was designed by famous Indian sculptor Ram V. Sutar and stands on Sadhu Bet Island near the Narmada River in Kevadia, Gujarat. With a height of 182 metres (597 feet), it is currently the tallest statue in the world. It was inaugurated on 31 October 2018 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Today, the Statue of Unity is not just a popular tourist attraction but also a symbol of national unity, patriotism, and the vision of a strong and united India.
