📜 History
Girnar is one of the oldest and most sacred mountain ranges in India, located near Junagadh in Gujarat. Its history goes back thousands of years and is closely connected with Hinduism and Jainism. Ancient records suggest that Girnar has been an important pilgrimage destination since the time of the Mauryan Empire. One of its biggest historical attractions is the Ashoka Rock Edicts, where Emperor Ashoka had his messages on peace, non-violence, and good governance engraved in the 3rd century BCE. These inscriptions are among the oldest historical records found in India. Over the centuries, Girnar became a respected religious centre. Hindus believe that Lord Dattatreya performed penance here, and the footprints at the highest peak are worshipped by devotees. The mountain is also home to the famous Amba Mata Temple and several ancient shrines that attract pilgrims throughout the year.
For the Jain community, Girnar holds immense religious importance because it is believed that the 22nd Tirthankara, Lord Neminath, attained salvation (Moksha) here. The beautiful Jain temples built on the hill date back to the 11th and 12th centuries and are admired for their detailed carvings and architecture. Today, Girnar is not only a major pilgrimage site but also a place where history, spirituality, and nature come together. Every year, thousands of devotees and trekkers visit the hill to experience its religious significance and breathtaking views.
